1101 St. Paul BEFORE

1101 St. Paul AFTER

These are pictures of my apartment in Baltimore, Maryland AFTER we painted all the walls. Enjoy!

Mike is my friend who designed and painted my walls.

This is the second bedroom, which I use as an office. The table and chairs were here only temporarily. I gave them to Mike.

This is my living room, facing the walkway to the entrance foyer. I love that cocktail bar cabinet - I purchased it in a consignment shop in Philadelphia.

My living room area. That is an old TV set - I now have a flat panel.

My dining area. I sold this table to my friend Mike when I moved from Baltimore to Washington, DC. My apartment in DC is much smaller, and did not have room for such a large table. Now that I'm back in Baltimore, I really miss that table! I still have those chairs, and will buy another table like this when I get a job!!

My bedroom. Mike designed this pattern of plaid with navy blue and white stripes.
My kitchen. Note the HUGE American-style refrigerator/freezer!

The Bars

Mount Vernon is where you'll find the gay bars. There are several from which to choose. Here are a few:

Grand Central/ Central Station Pub is the "main" gay bar. This is where the 20- and 30-something professionals hang out, as well as others. There is a dance section, a billiards table in the back, and an upstairs area and balcony.

The Drinkery is a "dive" bar - dumpy, no-frills, cheap drinks, cheap guys :) It's actually a lot nicer looking than it used to be. This bar attracts a more diverse group of gays - blacks, transvestites, poorer working class people. There are two sections - the main bar (pictured) and another bar next door where they have karaoke on the weekends.

The exterior of The Drinkery.

A poor photo of Auggie, one of the bartenders. This guy is so nice, and he remembers my favorite drink even if he hasn't seen me in months!

Club Hippopotamus, also known simply as The Hippo. This has been a gay bar since the early 1970s, and has been a nightclub for many years before. The largest dance floor in any gay bar in Baltimore is here.

These three are photos of Jay's Bar (Jay's on Read.) This is Baltimore's only gay piano bar. My friend Matthew plays here on Thursday nights.

Inside the bar. Photo is too dark.

Exterior. Beautiful signage and awning.

Mount Vernon Place

These are photos of buildings on or very near Mt. Vernon Place. This is a circle and four squares of gardens which form the center and heart of the neighborhood of Mt. Vernon.

I will revise this posting to put the pictures in proper order, but for now, the description is in order of the photos posted.

This is the east side of Mount Vernon Place (we're looking South on Charles Street). Washington Place Apartments, a luxury cooperative, is the white marble building. Just north of it is the old Stafford Hotel. Now an apartment building for students attending Johns Hopkins University or the Peabody Institute, it had fallen on hard times and was, until the mid-2000s, used as low income housing.

View facing north, a more direct view of Washington Place Apartments and the Stafford Hotel. The red brick building ahead of the Stafford is an office/restaurant complex which houses Donna's Coffee House.

Another view of Washington Place Apartments. The elevator in this building is hand operated by the doorman! Residents ring up the doorman when they wish to use the elevator.

The beautiful interior of the Peabody

The Peabody Institute, which includes the Conservatory school of music, is affiliated with Johns Hopkins University.

This is the Mount Vernon Place United Methodist Church. This structure is unique for its green hue.

The Walters Art Museum. Per its website, "The collection presents an overview of world art from pre-dynastic Egypt to 20th-century Europe, and counts among its many treasures Greek sculpture and Roman sarcophagi; medieval ivories and Old Master paintings; Art Deco jewelry and 19th-century European and American masterpieces."

Peabody Court Hotel. They have a great little restaurant where they serve a nice brunch on weekends.

Some buildings along Mount Vernon Place. Wealthy families used to live in these large town homes along the gardens. Now, these buildings are occupied by museums, businesses and private clubs and organizations.

View looking north. The Washington Monument was dedicated to our first President. This predates the more well known one in our capitol.

More views of the Monument. In December, there is a Monument Lighting Ceremony! Holiday lights surround the Monument. There are also fireworks!

Belevedere Hotel Condominium

The Belevedere used to be a hotel, and is now a condominium. It is located only a block away from my condo. It was built in 1904 and patterned after the famous Plaza Hotel in New York City. It fell into disrepair by the 1970s, and was once used as a college dormitory before it was shuttered. Later, it was renovated into condos.

Inside the Belvedere, there is a banquet hall used for weddings and parties, a restaurant called the Owl Bar, and a bar/lounge on the 13th floor.

Notice, in the first photo, that my condo is visible behind the sign!
