Mount Vernon is where you'll find the gay bars. There are several from which to choose. Here are a few:

Grand Central/ Central Station Pub is the "main" gay bar. This is where the 20- and 30-something professionals hang out, as well as others. There is a dance section, a billiards table in the back, and an upstairs area and balcony.

The Drinkery is a "dive" bar - dumpy, no-frills, cheap drinks, cheap guys :) It's actually a lot nicer looking than it used to be. This bar attracts a more diverse group of gays - blacks, transvestites, poorer working class people. There are two sections - the main bar (pictured) and another bar next door where they have karaoke on the weekends.

The exterior of The Drinkery.

A poor photo of Auggie, one of the bartenders. This guy is so nice, and he remembers my favorite drink even if he hasn't seen me in months!

Club Hippopotamus, also known simply as The Hippo. This has been a gay bar since the early 1970s, and has been a nightclub for many years before. The largest dance floor in any gay bar in Baltimore is here.

These three are photos of Jay's Bar (Jay's on Read.) This is Baltimore's only gay piano bar. My friend Matthew plays here on Thursday nights.

Inside the bar. Photo is too dark.

Exterior. Beautiful signage and awning.
